The Friends of the Newark Monastery, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed by a group of lay Catholics who, at the request of Fr. Benedict Groeschel, arranged to finance and purchase Most Blessed Sacrament Friary (formerly the Monastery of St. Dominic) so that the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal could bring their mission of service to the poor, evangelization and renewal to the Newark area.
Today, Most Blessed Sacrament Friary is home to the Friar novices (with an average of 12 novices each year) and a number of professed friars. It has become a beacon of hope to the people of Newark. They have also opened part of the friary as a retreat center for priests and seminarians.
But the work of providing for the Friars continues. The Friends of the Newark Monastery must make annual mortgage payments of $82,000. The funds for the mortgage come completely from the Friends of the Newark Monastery. We use no funds that are directed to the Friars’ missionary or charity work.
We need your help. Please join the Friends of the Newark Monastery in continuing to provide the Friars with this most beautiful and holy Friary. Refer to this website for information on upcoming events. To make a donation, please send your check to:

What is the commitment of an Associate?

Lay men and women have been attracted to the holiness of Saint Francis of Assisi for centuries. Among the laity, there continues to be an attraction to Saint Francis which the Lord uses to stir the hearts of the faithful to embrace the Gospel more earnestly. The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal seek to follow faithfully in the footsteps of Christ and Saint Francis by embracing the ideals of the Capuchin Franciscan reform. The friars are happy that they can offer others an opportunity to share in their life through the lay associates program.

At the beginning of the new year there is an opportunity for lay men and women to make a one year commitment to the lay associates program. The commitment is a manifestation of the prompting of the Lord to live the spirituality of Saint Francis in the world as a lay person.

The commitment consists of:

  • Prayer - Each day a lay associate is to spend some time in prayer, preferably using the Liturgy of the Hours. Other suggestions are daily Mass, Adoration, the Rosary, and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

  • Attendance at monthly Associate Days.

  • Availability to assist the friars in their work of evangelization and care of the poor in their neighborhood.
